Anti-bias education is an approach to early childhood education in Prince William County, Virginia that entails establishing values-based principles and methodology. This is fostered in support of embracing and respecting differences while acting against unfairness and bias. An anti-bias curriculum creates a climate of positive self and group identity development where every child archives their full potential. Here, we break down the goals of an anti-bias education:

  • Identity

This goal entails supporting children to feel strong and proud of who they are without the need to feel superior to their peers. In our daycare center in Manassas, Virginia, this means children learn accurate, respectful language to describe themselves and others. Teachers encourage this by fostering an environment where kids feel comfortable within their home and school culture.

  • Diversity

This goal involves guiding children to learn the ability to think about and have words for how people are the same and how they are different. In our learning center, this enables children to feel and behave respectfully and confidently with people who may be different from them. This goal teaches kids to treat all people fairly and with empathy.

  • Justice

This goal entails building children’s innate, budding capability to empathize and exercise fairness. This also involves building their cognitive skills for thinking critically about the world around them. Learning experiences include helping kids understand and practice skills that identify unfair and untrue images like stereotypes and comments like teasing. This builds a sense of safety and teaches the importance of equality.
